All my family is still there – my mom and dad, and tons of friends. I try and get there whenever I can and I’m pretty stoked to get there (on Saturday). I’ve also been talking a lot to Todd of Team Sleep and Zach Hill about making some music again.
Chino Moreno (You recently moved to Oregon after a few years of living in Southern California. How much do you get to Sacramento these days?)
Deftones is always my main focus. I’ve been doing it the longest and it’s definitely a priority. I think of these as projects. It’s not like I’m unfulfilled with a need to find another outlet. I look at it as making music with my friends, and I’m blessed that they’re great musicians.
Chino Moreno (At what point does a “side project” become a full fledged band for you? Do you even consider Crosses as a “side project”?)
Perhaps what’s most surprising about Chino is that he calls himself a hopeless romantic at heart. “I can’t help it, it’s the Mexican in me,” he says, enjoying himself. As is evident in the title of their latest album Koi No Yokan — a Japanese term for the idea that a relationship will evolve into love after the first meeting.
“I don’t see things so black and white. Just because I love heavy riffs and aggressive stuff doesn’t mean I don’t see the beauty in things,” he adds. I think that adds a lot of dynamic to what we do and I see it as a test for me to see how far we can take it.

Moreno, meanwhile was relaxed and in high spirits, like tempered excitements. I found him remarkably soft-spoken in contrast to his active stage persona who liked to dive into crowds and then run of to another part of the arena.
Did you know Chino likes to sew in his spare time? He repairs rips and tears from shirts and pants. “It’s pretty relaxing. Yeah, try it,” he grinned.

The only detail that I can give you is that fuck it’s badass.

Deftones - Digital Bath
"I don’t remember writing it really, but every time I look back it’s one of my favorites." - Chino Moreno
Obviously we’re an aggressive band — not the heaviest, but there’s a lot of attack. But there’s also this lush beauty that flows within everything that we do, and that’s my favorite part of the band. To me, it’s the epitome of what the Deftones do.
I like actually going on YouTube and watching covers like seeing a girl in a room on an acoustic guitar or someone on a piano transposing one of our songs. That stuff is awesome and its cool to think that our music inspired someone to try and figure it out and cycle through them and do their own version of it and it’s rad for sure.
That song (Mascara) has to do with my wife and how there’s certain things about her that I really don’t like and there’s a lot of things about her that I do like. And that’s why the song says ‘There’s something about her long shady eyes’. There’s just something about her that’s basically going to keep me with her forever no matter what. I think the day I die she’s going to be next to me and that’s what I want. No matter what. But there’s a lot of things about her that I don’t like and at the end of the song I say ‘It’s too bad you’re married to me’… because, I’m probably worse. I’m probably the worst person to be stuck with.
